Do I have to write the content myself?

No. We write it, and it is included in the price rather than quoted on top.

This is worth being blunt about because it is the most common place a website project dies. The design is signed off, the build is waiting, and the whole thing sits for four months because nobody has written the About page.

Why we do not hand that part back

A website is mostly words. The design is how the words are arranged and the code is how they are delivered, but what a visitor reads and decides on is the writing.

Handing that back to the person who hired you is handing back the job, then blaming them when the site does not work. It is also why so many sites launch with placeholder text that nobody ever replaced.

Copy comes before design here for the same reason. A design drawn around real sentences fits them. A design drawn around invented text has to be argued with later, usually by cutting the real sentences down to fit.

What we actually need from you

Facts, not prose. Specifically:

An hour or two of conversation at the start. What you do, who for, what you charge or what governs the charge, what you turn down, what people get wrong about your field. This is the part only you have.

Corrections on a first draft. You read what we wrote and tell us where it is wrong, overstated, or not how you would put it. Marking up a draft takes most people twenty minutes. Writing from nothing takes them four months.

A factual check, and in some fields a professional one. Where the writing touches clinical, legal or financial accuracy, that review has to come from you. We can write plainly about what you do. We cannot be the person responsible for whether it is correct.

If you already have words you like

Say so at the start rather than at the end.

Plenty of people have a paragraph they wrote years ago that says the thing exactly right. Those survive. We will work with what you have rather than around it, and the rest gets written to sit alongside it.

What does not work is discovering in week six that you always intended to rewrite everything yourself.

What about using software to write it

We use the tools where they help, mostly for the mechanical parts. What we do not do is publish something nobody has read properly and nobody stands behind.

The reason is not principle. It is that generic text is exactly what the search work is trying to get you out of. A page that reads like every other page in your sector gives Google and an assistant no reason to quote you rather than anybody else.
